The New Face of Cardiac Surgery in Bangladesh

Evolution of Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac surgery has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few decades, evolving from highly invasive, high-risk procedures to precision-driven, patient-centred interventions. Today, the “state of the art” in cardiac surgery reflects a convergence of advanced technology, refined surgical techniques, multidisciplinary collaboration, and data-driven decision-making.

Cardiac Surgery in Bangladesh: Progress & Challenges

Cardiac surgery in Bangladesh has evolved from a limited, highly specialized service into an established and expanding discipline that now serves a large and growing population with cardiovascular disease. This progress reflects decades of institutional development, professional commitment, and gradual technological advancement within a resource-constrained healthcare system.

Modern Transformation of Heart Surgery

From the early 2000s onward, cardiac surgery services expanded beyond the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases into private sector institutions, public medical colleges, and military hospitals. Several centers in Dhaka and other major cities began offering routine open-heart surgery, significantly increasing national surgical capacity. The establishment of postgraduate training programs, including MS and FCPS in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), strengthened workforce development and contributed to a steady rise in the number of trained cardiac surgeons.

Future of Cardiac Care in Bangladesh

Over the past two decades, cardiac surgery in Bangladesh has steadily aligned with global standards through significant technological and clinical advancements. Many centers have adopted off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery, reducing complications associated with cardiopulmonary bypass and improving outcomes in high-risk patients. Refinements in myocardial protection strategies and cardiopulmonary bypass techniques have enhanced intraoperative safety and postoperative recovery. Surgical expertise has expanded beyond routine procedures to include valve replacement surgery, as well as aortic and congenital heart surgery in selected specialized centers.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery by Prof. Dr. Md. Faizus Sazzad

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) represents one of the most important contemporary developments in this field. In Bangladesh, Prof. Sazzad introduced minimally invasive cardiac surgery in 2015, pioneering the adoption of less invasive surgical techniques aimed at reducing surgical trauma, shortening hospital stays, and improving patient recovery. His work contributed significantly to advancing modern cardiac surgical practices within the country.

Expanding Cardiac Surgery Capacity in a Growing Healthcare System

In 2025, Prof. Sazzad further strengthened this vision by establishing the Unico Heart Surgery Center at Unico Hospitals PLC, where he is the founder of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department. The center was designed as a modern, smarter cardiac care facility dedicated to advanced heart surgery, integrating contemporary surgical technology, structured perioperative care, and multidisciplinary collaboration to deliver high-quality cardiac treatment.

Challenges and Opportunities in Bangladesh’s Cardiac Care

Today, Bangladesh performs thousands of cardiac surgical procedures annually, catering to both adult and pediatric cardiac diseases. Despite this substantial progress, the healthcare system continues to face significant challenges, including a high patient load disproportionate to available surgical capacity, late presentation of cardiac disease, and limitations in resources and trained manpower, particularly outside major urban centers.

Towards World-Class Cardiac Surgery Through Continuous Innovation

Therefore, it is essential to refocus our efforts to maintain a high standard of surgical outcomes while simultaneously introducing state-of-the-art practices. Aligning surgical techniques, infrastructure, and clinical protocols with those of the developed world ensures that patients receive the safest and most effective care. Such an approach not only minimizes postoperative complications and mortality but also fosters innovation, attracts skilled professionals, and strengthens confidence in the healthcare system. In essence, continuous improvement and adoption of advanced practices are crucial for delivering world-class cardiac care while sustaining excellence in surgical outcomes.

Unlock the world of MICS With (Adj) Professor Md Faizus Sazzad

What Is MICS?
  • MICS is heart surgery done through small cuts, usually between the ribs.
  • The chest bone is not fully opened.
  • Special instruments and cameras are used.
How Is It Different from Open Heart Surgery?
  • Open heart surgery requires a long cut in the middle of the chest.
  • Recovery usually takes longer.
  • MICS uses much smaller incisions.
  • Pain is usually less.
  • Blood loss is lower.
  • Hospital stay is shorter.
  • Patients return to normal life sooner.
  • Scars are smaller and less visible.
Can Every Patient Choose MICS?

Not always. Safety comes first.
The decision depends on:

  • Type of heart disease
  • Complexity of the problem
  • Age and general health
  • Previous heart surgery
  • Lung or kidney disease
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery: A New Era in Heart Care

Heart surgery has changed significantly over the years. It is no longer always associated with large cuts, long hospital stays, and prolonged recovery. One of the most important advances in modern heart care is Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS), which offers effective treatment with less physical trauma to the patient.

A New Era of Heart Surgery: Less Pain, Faster Recovery

MICS is a form of heart surgery performed through small incisions, usually between the ribs. Unlike traditional open heart surgery, the chest bone is not fully opened. Surgeons use special instruments and cameras to reach the heart and treat the disease with the same level of precision. The heart problem is corrected without compromising safety or effectiveness.

From Open Surgery to Minimal Access: The Future of Cardiac Care

Traditional open heart surgery requires a long incision in the center of the chest and splitting of the breastbone to access the heart. While this approach remains necessary for many complex conditions, it often leads to more pain and longer recovery. In contrast, patients undergoing MICS usually experience less pain, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, faster return to daily activities, and better cosmetic results due to smaller scars.

Precision Heart Surgery with Minimal Trauma

MICS can be used to treat several heart conditions, including heart valve repair or replacement, selected coronary bypass procedures, and some heart rhythm disorders. However, not every patient is suitable for minimally invasive surgery. The decision depends on the type and severity of heart disease, the patient’s age and overall health, previous heart operations, and the presence of other medical conditions. Patient safety is always the top priority.

Redefining Patient Experience in Cardiac Surgery

Minimally invasive heart surgery is now available in Bangladesh, although it is offered only in selected hospitals with appropriate expertise and modern facilities. Performing MICS requires specialized training, advanced equipment, and a coordinated surgical team. As experience grows, access to this form of surgery is expected to expand.

Expanding Access to Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery in Bangladesh

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery has significantly improved the patient experience. It reduces physical and emotional stress, lowers the risk of infection, and helps patients recover faster. For many, it means returning to family life and work much sooner than with traditional surgery.

Advanced Cardiac Care at Unico Hospitals PLC

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery represents a major step forward in heart care. It reflects a shift toward safer, more precise, and patient-centered treatment. At Unico Hospitals PLC, the cardiac surgery service has been equipped and structured to deliver advanced, state-of-the-art minimally invasive cardiac surgery. With trained teams, modern technology, and a commitment to continuous improvement, Unico Hospitals PLC aims to make high-quality, patient-friendly heart surgery accessible locally.
